
PVCaware.org gets installers views

Seventy two per cent of window installers said they would display the PVCaware.org logo according to a survey conducted on behalf of the campaign organisers at the British Plastics Federation.
The survey, which aimed to be a barometer of installer views on trade bodies, was conducted by BPF member and Fighting Back with Facts founder Martin Randall and responded to by more than 50 SME customers of Crystal, where Martin is Chairman.
Just over half (55%) of those who responded were members of either Fensa or to a lesser extent Certass, but none was a member of federations for either plastics or windows. Perhaps unsurprisingly therefore, just 36% had heard of the BPF, although all thought some of the services it offered could benefit them.
One surprising result, given the UK recycled 42,730 tonnes of post-consumer PVC in 2008, was that 91% said they did not recycle and several stated they would not know how to. The 9% who did recycle old windows and doors said they were paid a small amount by PVC scrap collectors, which was a bonus compared to paying for skips.
Martin said: “We are evaluating this information very carefully. Clearly there are some resounding issues of lack of awareness. It is my opinion we need to do more in the way of advertising and PR and to review our budgets.
“Having built up a picture, we’ll now be doing a second questionnaire to a wider audience, as we promised at the outset. What needs to be determined is how we can work with the industry to promote PVC-U windows and how we can make that engagement of value to everyone who participates. We’ve a long way to go.”
