Because money doesn't grow
on trees...
The skipping of PVC-U profiles, including old frames, simply does not make commercial sense and will be costing your company money when you may well even be able to make money out of recycling them.
It is assumed by many that recyclers are only interested in ‘virgin’ offcuts. That is simply not the case. Old profiles that may be past their useful life as windows, are easily re-processed into brand new frames and other products. The PVC obtained in the recycling process is 100% pure and can be used for the production of new profiles without affecting quality.
Thus the life of this valuable material is greatly extended whilst establishing PVC as a sustainable material, even more desirable to buyers with an environmental conscience.
For installers removing old PVC window frames and other building materials the choice is simple: incentive payments are available to cover collection and transport costs and, when the growing cost of skips to landfill sites is taken into account, it is possible to turn a financial deficit at least into a balance. It should be no more difficult to pass your PVC waste to a recycler than it is to dump it.
These days it pays to be green. By demonstrating that your business disposes of old windows thoughtfully you will win extra customers who may be considering other frame materials that they believe are more environmentally friendly. You will also be contributing to an industry wide movement that is showing how PVC can be one of the most sustainable materials used in building and construction and especially windows, as it may be recycled over and over.
The benefits of recycling PVC are very clear
- Possible incentive payments to cover collection and transport costs
- Collection service or drop off to convenient collection points depending on volume
- Reduced disposal costs on skips to landfill
- Demonstrating a positive recycling strategy will win you new customers
- Helping to meet recycling targets will be good for the image of the whole industry
- Helps to counter negative and often untruthful claims by so-called environmental activists
The recycling of PVC is handled Europe-wide by the Recovinyl scheme. Recovinyl is an initiative of Vinyl 2010 which is a commitment of the entire European PVC sector to advance sustainable development by improving production processes, minimising emissions, investing in recycling technology and boosting the collection and recycling of waste.
One of the main challenges faced by Vinyl 2010 is collection and Recovinyl subsidises registered companies that recover the old windows they remove and get them to an accredited recycler, for which there is now a large network throughout the UK.
